German
Shepherd Dogs Working!
German Shepherds are known
as a dog breed that offers such characteristics as loyalty, intelligence, athletic
ability, and very importantly versatility. Due to these valuable attributes, the
German Shepherd is used in many "jobs". These jobs include everything from
therapy and assistance to herding and protection! German Shepherds were one of the
original assistance dogs.
"Take this trouble
for me: Make sure my shepherd dog remains a working dog, for I have struggled all my life
long for that aim." --
Max von Stephanitz

(If you have a photo
of your GSD "working" and would like to share it, please e-mail
it to dawgphoto@hotmail.com with "working
GSD" in the subject line. Please tell us the name of the dog, your name, where
you are from if you would like, and what "job" the dog is doing.
We'd love to see some photos of assistance dogs and therapy dogs here, too!) |

Michaelene
writes: "Starr, my rescued German Shepherd Dog, who does service as well as
therapy work, was invited to participate in "Pet Story Time" at Book World in
Michigan. Starr enjoyed having the children read to her and earned some 'people cookies'
as her reward.
Therapists and teachers have recently noted that children feel more comfortable reading to
animals than to adults stating that the pets don't mind when a word is mispronounced or is
difficult to sound out.
Starr thought it was a wonderful way to spend her morning! She made lots of new friends
and at the same time brought 'home' the fact that there are many animals in service to
others that started their lives abandoned at animal shelters needing a new home.
Starr is a member of
"All Creatures Great and Small" pet therapy. She goes to nursing homes, the
local hospital, schools to teach humane care of animals and other events that she is asked
to attend."
...from the pound
to a rising 'star'.
(The webmaster's daughter
has participated in a program at our local library reading to a Border Collie and was very
impressed!)
